The traditional use of putting them on the couch is still one of the most effective ways to make your room pop. If the pop is what your needing then go with a color that contrasts with the other colors in the room.
For instance if your family room is done in neutrals and your couch is brown, something bright like orange, could change the whole feel of the room. If blue is what your using you can use several different shades of blue to mix it up a bit. And don't forget your bed when your looking for things that love lots of pillows. A few extra ones on the bed can really help achieve that luxurious feel of a nice motel.
