Choosing the Perfect Bed Pillow

It is used to be easy. Your bed pillow became flat and you wanted a new one. You went to the store; you looked at maybe two or three different kinds. You picked the one that fit your best, whether you wanted one that was firm or one that was bit softer. But that isn't the case anymore. Choosing the perfect bed pillow can actually be a chore.

Have you seen the choices you have now in a regular department store? Almost all stores have at least one display row devoted to pillows, most have two. Then there are the specialty stores who have a galore of pillows choices. Where do you start?

You start by knowing a little bit about pillows and knowing what type of pillow you need. Sure you might want one that is soft. But do you need one that also supports your neck or back? These are questions you need to ponder. Then you need a brief understanding of pillows, pillow types and pillow styles.

--Down pillows. These are generally pretty soft, once you have them for a while. They also tend to mold to the position you want. But they are also pretty expensive.

-- A latex pillow may be a better choice if you like a pillow that doesn't lose its shape. This type of pillow is especially good for those who have neck or spine problems.

--Alpaca pillows are also a bit pricey. But they are soft. They are made from 70% alpaca and 30% wool.

--Silk pillows are great, if you don't use them often. Plus, they are really pretty. These would be perfect for traveling or for you to put on a guest bed.

--Cotton pillows are great for people who have allergies. People prone to allergies could very well be allergic to any goose down pillow, wool pillow and possibly to alpaca pillows. Cotton pillows are also less expensive and wear really well.

--Polyester pillows are also inexpensive. They are usually a bit firmer. But they don't last as long as some of the more expensive pillows; therefore you may be buying a new set sooner.

--If you are a person who loves firm pillows check the fullness content. The filling is what makes a pillow firm. The pillows that have a higher filler count will be the firmness.

--If you sleep on your stomach or move around a lot in bed, you may want a softer pillow. This will help to keep some strain off of your neck.

--Check the sides of your pillow before buying. You want to make sure the seams are sewn tightly and are secure. This will prevent the filling from leaking.

--If you suffer from allergies, you may want to purchase a pillow cover to put over your pillow. These come with a zipper. You put the pillow inside the cover. Then you place your pillow case over the cover.

Pillow shopping and pillow choosing is a bit more difficult than it once was. But all these varieties give us a better chance of getting a better night's sleep and waking up more refreshed. For these reasons, all the work in choosing a bed pillow is well worth it.
